Dental Cleaning McLean
A dental cleaning is a preventative care procedure to maintain good oral health. Most patients are on a routine cleaning schedule every 6 months. Some patients, however, require a more frequent schedule due to risk factors such as:
- Inability to sufficiently clean crowded teeth
- Gum Inflammation due to medication
- Diabetes
- Genetic factors
What does a dental cleaning involve?
A dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar from teeth and the gum line. The dental hygienist uses an ultrasonic and hand scaler to effectively remove buildup. Routine cleanings are a preventative measure against decay, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.
What is plaque and tartar?
Plaque and tartar are the main cause of tooth decay, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Plaque is a thin film that attaches to teeth. It is made of bacteria and food particles which later hardens to tartar. Patients can avoid the buildup by brushing and flossing as recommended. However, routine dental cleanings are important because the hygienist can reach all areas of the mouth. Also, tartar can only be removed at a dental office.
What is the procedure?
After your dental hygienist removes the plaque and tartar, he or she will polish your teeth. You will notice the hygienist using a high-powered brush with gritty paste. These two components offer the best results for a bright smile. At the end of the visit the hygienist may apply an additional fluoride treatment if indicated. Fluoride treatment is recommended for children under 18 with moderate and high cavity risk, and adults with exposed root surfaces and/or high cavity risk.
