Tooth Extraction McLean
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth for the purpose of improving a patient’s oral health. Commonly, patients have wisdom teeth removed but other reasons could result in extraction. For example, tooth impaction, severe decay, periodontal disease, and injury also lead to tooth removal. Should the procedure be recommended, our team will discuss teeth replacement as necessary.
What should I expect from a tooth extraction?
If a tooth needs to be removed for any reason, it will be done under local anesthesia. The anesthetic numbs the area completely so no discomfort is felt during the extraction. The extraction site is then cleaned, and may require a stitch. Depending on the difficulty of extraction, post-operative discomfort varies. We use the latest surgical techniques to deliver the best and most conservative care. Our patients are pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort there is following a tooth extraction.
How should I care for my mouth after the procedure?
Infection and excessive bleeding are important to avoid. Patients will receive post-operative instructions to assist them with recovery. In general, avoid drinking from a straw, spitting, smoking, and alcohol. Try to avoid eating on the side of the extraction area as well.
Patients can use ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication to decrease discomfort. Should you notice bleeding, apply gauze to the affected area and bite down. Overall, recovery should take a few days.
Seek medical attention if any of the following occurs:
- Fever
- Experience excessive bleeding
